Position Title: Substation Designer - Physical
Location: 1301 Solana Blvd Bldg 2 STE 2500, Westlake, TX 77034
Primary Function:
As a member of a project team, the Physical Substation Designer performs routine design assignments, which require knowledge and skill in basic deign techniques and procedures, under limited supervision. Knowledge of physical substation layout and electrical or civil fundaments is required. Successful candidates may be placed in a Designer I, II or III title depending on skill and experience level.
Duties & Responsibilities
Employee may be called upon to perform any or all of the following functions:
- Produce new drawings from examples of previous project and/or standards.
- Produce High Voltage substation layouts & elevation drawings from a one-line electrical drawing.
- Produce conduit & Grounding drawings.
- Calculate cable lengths, conduit fill, or other basic tasks.
- Create Substation Bill of Materials, including manufacturer part numbers, quantities, footage, etc.
- Complete work in pre-defined times to meet proposal and project schedules.
- Oversee project-specific activities of drafters and more junior designers.
- Research information in catalogs, specifications, corporate standards, or other reference material
- May be called upon to calculate ground grid requirements to IEEE standards using task-specific software.
- May be called upon to calculate structure heights and weights, concrete volumes, equipment fit-up, or other basic tasks.
- Must be able to work extensive overtime at certain times.
- Learn and use task-specific software, including the document management system.
- Learn and apply corporate standard engineering practices.
- Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of his/her work.
- Bring potential project-related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the responsible party.
- Travel out of town for short periods of time as required by projects and assignments.
- Other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications / Experience
A minimum of five years experience in physical substation design, or related experience, is required. An Associate's degree in drafting & design is preferred. Successful candidates with more than five years of experience may be placed in more senior level designer titles depending on skill.
- Strong knowledge of the major components of substations and the types of drawings required to construct an electrical substation.
- Strong knowledge and proven experience creating the bill of materials as it relates to a substation.
- Strong knowledge physical substation layout, elevations, grounding, foundations, and conduit
- Ability to produce steel drawings is a plus.
- General knowledge of control circuits and ground grid theory & design
- Extensive knowledge of CADD programs such as AutoCAD
- Strong knowledge of civil/structural codes and standards (NESC, and applicable IEEE, ANSI, AISC, and ACI) is a plus.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft office products including Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Mathematics, including algebra and basic trigonometry.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills to effectively convey information to team members, management, and clients when necessary.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
Physical Requirements:
- This position requires minimal physical effort.
- Must be able to endure prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer for a minimum of 8 hours a day
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee will primarily work indoors, with occasional outdoor exposure to year around weather conditions and noise.
- Must be able and willing to travel overnight for trainings and/or meetings as required (10%)
- Working extended hours, including weekends, may be required periodically.
- May occasionally lift up to 25 pounds at a time.
