Primary Function:
The Civil Designer will perform routine design and drafting assignments related to land development and site civil work for substation and energy infrastructure projects, requiring knowledge and skill in basic design techniques and procedures under close supervision. The position will be based in our The Woodlands, TX office located at 1575 Sawdust Rd, Suite 300 The Woodlands, TX 77380 and will report to Dashiell’s Supervising Engineer.
Duties & Responsibilities
Employee may be called upon to perform any or all of the following functions:
- Produce new site civil drawings — including site layout, grading, drainage, and erosion control plans — from examples of previous projects and/or standards with some supervision.
- Research information in catalogues, specifications, corporate standards, local regulations, and other reference materials applicable to land development and site civil design.
- Perform basic calculations related to earthwork volumes, drainage areas, grading slopes, and stormwater runoff.
- Learn and properly use the Dashiell document management system.
- Learn and apply corporate standard drafting and design practices for land development and site civil work.
- Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of his/her work.
- Bring potential project-related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the responsible party.
- Travel out of town for short periods of time as required by projects and assignments.
- Perform special projects and complete other duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications / Experience
Required
- Associate’s Degree in Drafting & Design, Civil Technology, or related field is required; equivalent professional experience of 2 or more years may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Drafting experience with a background in land development, site civil, or related civil design disciplines is strongly preferred.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D or AutoCAD 2010 or newer is required.
- Knowledge of site civil drafting including grading, drainage, erosion and sediment control, and utility layout.
- Mathematics, including algebra and basic trigonometry.
- Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and email software.
- Basic oral and written communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Valid driver’s license required; must maintain an acceptable driving record throughout employment.
Preferred
- Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Microstation, or other civil design platforms.
- Familiarity with substation site layout or energy infrastructure projects.
- Basic knowledge of grading ordinances, stormwater requirements, or land disturbance permitting.

- Ability to sit for extended periods during office-based work.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during field visits.
- Ability to walk on uneven terrain, gravel, and graded surfaces.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to travel to project sites as required.
Environmental Conditions
- Combination of climate-controlled office work and outdoor construction environments.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions including heat, cold, wind, and rain.
- Exposure to noise, dust, and industrial conditions during site visits.
Driving & Safety-Sensitive Positions
- This position requires a valid driver’s license and compliance with Dashiell’s motor vehicle policies. Incumbents must maintain an acceptable driving record throughout employment.
