Position Description: CAD Technician
Location: 720 Butterfield Rd STE 200 Lombard, IL 60148
Primary Function:
The CAD Technician performs drafting and design duties for medium/high voltage substation or transmission line projects. Assignments range from closely supervised (CAD Technician I) to independent and complex (CAD Technician IV) work, depending on level and experience. CAD Technicians may specialize in Electrical, Transmission, or Civil/Structural design.
Duties & Responsibilities
Employee may be called upon to perform any or all of the following functions:
· Revise CADD drawings per engineering markups
· Perform engineering support tasks under direct supervision (e.g. transmittals)
· Learn and apply the corporate/client standard of drafting and engineering practices
· Learn and properly use document management systems
· Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of his/her work
· Bring potential project-related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the responsible party
· Travel out of town for short periods of time as required by projects and assignments
· Perform other duties as assigned
Skill Progression
CAD Technician I
• Entry-level; performs drafting duties under direct supervision.
• Experience with AutoCAD 2010 or newer (required); MicroStation and 3D CAD preferred.
• Fundamental understanding of drafting principles, geometry, and computer applications (Word, Excel, email).
• Demonstrates ability to work effectively in a team and communicate clearly.
CAD Technician II
• Intermediate level; performs tasks under limited supervision.
• Proficient in revising drawings from markups, sketches, or verbal instructions.
• Working knowledge of substation terminology, standards, and document management systems.
• Able to perform engineering support tasks independently and assist with project documentation.
• Demonstrates consistent quality, accuracy, and understanding of client and corporate standards.
CAD Technician III
• Advanced level; performs complex drafting and limited design work with minimal supervision.
• Extensive knowledge of corporate and client standards, CAD software, and substation systems.
• Expert-level proficiency with AutoCAD; familiarity with MicroStation and 3D modeling preferred.
• Capable of mentoring junior staff and contributing to CAD standards development.
• Understanding of industry standards (ANSI, ASCE, ASTM, ACI, NEC, IEEE, NFPA).
• May assist with light design work and client communications.
Minimum Qualifications / Experience
Possess skills in the following areas:
- Experience with AutoCAD 2010 and newer is required.
- Experience with Microstation preferred but not required
- 3D CADD experience preferred but not required
- Basic drafting including drawing scales, drawing layouts (Paperspace/Modelspace), and accurately reproducing engineering markups
- CADD, word processing, spreadsheet, and e-mail software
- College level geometry
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal, with co-worker
Physical Requirements
This position requires minimal physical effort.
- Must be able to endure prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer for a minimum of 8 hours a day
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee will primarily work indoors, with occasional outdoor exposure to year around weather conditions and noise.
- If off-site visits are required, the employee will provide their own steel-toed work boots – the Company will provide all other PPE as needed
- Working extended hours, including weekends, though rare, may be required periodically.
- May occasionally lift up to 25 pounds at a time.

Compensation:
$45,000 - $80,000 yearly
The compensation range for this position is compliant with all local and state regulations and is based on several factors such as work experience, education, qualifications, and internal and external market factors.
