Field Services Intern – Testing & Commissioning

Primary Function:

In this Field Services Intern – Testing & Commissioning role, you will support field engineers and technicians in the inspection, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning of medium- and high-voltage electrical equipment. This hands-on position provides exposure to substation commissioning, protective relay testing, electrical system verification, and field documentation within active construction and operational environments.

This internship is designed to provide practical field experience in electrical testing and commissioning while reinforcing safety, quality, and technical standards.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

Employee may be called upon to perform any or all of the following functions:

  • Assist field engineers and technicians with commissioning and acceptance testing of electrical equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, protective relays, control systems, and switchgear.
  • Support functional testing and verification of protection and control systems.
  • Assist with troubleshooting electrical systems under supervision.
  • Help collect, organize, and review field test data and documentation.
  • Support preparation of commissioning reports and turnover documentation.
  • Observe and learn proper use of electrical testing equipment and tools.
  • Participate in job safety briefings and adhere to all safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and organized manner.
  • Travel to project sites as assigned to support testing and commissioning activities.
  • Perform special projects and complete other duties as assigned or requested.

  • Contribute to accurate documentation and testing quality across field services projects.
  • Reinforce Dashiell’s safety culture by actively participating in job hazard analyses and safe work practices.
  • Support field teams in delivering projects on schedule and in compliance with client specifications.
  • Build foundational technical skills in testing, commissioning, and electrical system troubleshooting.

 

Minimum Qualifications / Experience

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related technical degree program.
  • Completion of coursework in power systems, electrical circuits, or related subjects preferred.
  • Basic understanding of electrical theory and safety principles.
  • Strong interest in power systems, substations, and field-based engineering work.
  • Willingness to travel and work in outdoor field environments.
  • Ability to follow technical instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods on uneven terrain, gravel, and graded surfaces typical of construction sites.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and access elevated work areas.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, and work in confined spaces as needed.
  • Ability to wear required PPE at all times, including hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, FR clothing, and hearing protection.
  • Ability to travel to project sites, which may include overnight stays.
  • Working extended hours, including early mornings or weekends, may be required periodically.
