Primary Function

The Mechanic Assistant supports Dacon’s Equipment Maintenance team by performing a variety of general shop tasks and assisting mechanics with the day-to-day maintenance and upkeep of fleet vehicles and heavy construction equipment. This entry-level position is ideal for a dependable, hardworking individual with a mechanical aptitude and a willingness to learn. The position will be based at our Deer Park, Texas facility located at 1300 Underwood Rd, Deer Park, TX 77536, and will report to Dacon’s Equipment Maintenance Supervisor.

Duties & Responsibilities

Employee may be called upon to perform any or all of the following functions:

Equipment & Maintenance Support

  • Assist the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor and mechanics with day-to-day maintenance and repair tasks on fleet vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Support preventive maintenance efforts including fluid checks, filter changes, and basic inspections under mechanic supervision.
  • Clean and prepare equipment and vehicles before and after service or repair.
  • Operate shop equipment such as pressure washers, hoists, and floor jacks under supervision.

Parts & Logistics

  • Run parts between vendors, job sites, and the shop as needed.
  • Assist with loading, unloading, and staging equipment and materials.
  • Help coordinate equipment drop-offs and pick-ups.
  • Receive, organize, and stock parts and supply deliveries.

Shop Organization & Housekeeping

  • Perform general shop cleaning, organization, and upkeep to maintain a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Maintain tools and ensure proper storage and handling after use.
  • Dispose of waste materials (used fluids, filters, etc.) in compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Stock and organize parts inventory, tool storage, and supply areas.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all OSHA, DOT, and company safety procedures and policies at all times.
  • Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times while in the shop or yard.
  • Report unsafe conditions, near-misses, or incidents to the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor immediately.
  • Perform special projects and complete other duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications / Experience

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required.
  • Ability to use basic hand and power tools.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs. and perform physically demanding work in a shop and outdoor environment.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
  • Willingness to learn fleet maintenance processes, equipment terminology, and shop procedures.

Preferred

  • Basic mechanical knowledge or prior exposure to automotive, shop, or fleet environments.
  • Previous experience in a shop, construction, warehouse, or fleet environment.
  • Familiarity with basic equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Forklift experience, or willingness to obtain certification.
  • Interest in pursuing a career path in heavy equipment or fleet mechanics.

Physical Requirements

LEVEL 5 – Field Construction (Heavy Physical Work)

  • Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
  • Frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds; occasional lifting of up to 75 pounds with assistance or mechanical aids.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb frequently throughout the workday.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and physically demanding positions (kneeling, crawling, reaching overhead).
  • Ability to climb ladders and work at heights as required.
  • Ability to wear required PPE at all times, including hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, FR clothing, and hearing protection.
  • Ability to operate company vehicles safely and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work extended hours, including overtime and weekends as required.

Environmental Conditions

  • Work is primarily performed in a shop environment with exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, fumes, and industrial equipment.
  • Occasional outdoor work on the yard or at job sites in varying weather conditions.
  • Exposure to potential industrial hazards including heavy equipment, hydraulic systems, and electrical components.
