The Tax Staff Accountant will be located at our Houston office at 12301 Kurland Drive Houston, TX 77034.

Primary Function:

The Tax Staff Accountant position will work closely with the Indirect Tax Manager and the Sales and Purchasing Departments to provide guidance on Sales and Use Tax issues, audits, and filings. Additionally, the position will assist with other Accounting Department activities as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Employee may be called upon to perform any or all of the following functions:

  • Review state sales/use tax laws and literature to ensure compliance and best tax strategies/opportunities are utilized in each situation
  • Work closely with the Sales Department at the bid level to ensure sales/use taxes are clearly defined
  • Review contract language on sales/use to affirm or detect discrepancies from intended treatment
  • Coordinate Accounting and Purchasing Department activities with regards to sales/use tax including:
    • Maintain sales and use tax spreadsheet for tax treatment
    • Ensure proper tax treatment throughout the duration of each job
    • Communicate effectively when changes are made to the sales and use tax spreadsheet
    • Review contracts to ensure correct treatment of tax
    • Research and verify tax rates with jobsite addresses utilizing CCH and state taxing authority websites
    • Confirm proper treatment on monthly sales/use tax reporting
    • Create tax exemption certificates
    • Review tax exemption certificates from Purchasing Department for accuracy prior to CFO authorization
    • Acquire proper documentation and ensure it is available in a timely manner for audit support
  • Accounting Duties:
    • Maintain sales and use tax work papers and returns in the required format
    • Confirm that documentation provided to the sales department is properly saved in the sales database directory
    • File sales and use gross receipts returns as applicable
    • Reconcile tax gl accounts monthly
    • Participate and assist with sales and use tax audits
    • Assist Accounts Payable with pulling documentation for sales and use tax corrections as required
    • Process wires
    • Other duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications / Experience:
Bachelors degree in Accounting is required. Two years experience with sales/use tax application is highly preferred. CPA, or actively pursuing licensure, preferred. Experience with construction projects preferred. Prior participation in audits at the state level is preferred.

Employee must possess skills in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of sales/use tax application
  • Strong computer software skills including MS Office (principally Excel)
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask in order to meet deadlines
  • Strong detail oriented and analytical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal communications and organizational skills
